if you get a blend that is mixed and tinned with the gap at the top (see most Pease and Rattray's blends), and it has never been presses and aged before tinning, then you will be able to discern the various ingredients within the blend stepping forward at different times. Whether you spend $50, $100, $200, or more on a pipe, ten, 20, or 30 years later you will probably still have and beable to smoke that pipe.Īs to whether flavors shift and change, that in part depends upon how a blend is made. primarily the pipes, and you don't use them once and throw them away. don't know what you consider a good "stick", but can you get by on a $5 cigar? Or do you need to spend $10 or more? A $10 stogie will buy a tin of most tobaccos on the internet (+ p/h) and probably allow you to smoke a bowl everyday for 3 weeks. And one of the reasons that cigars held an appeal to those guys switching is the money. I tend to blends which derive their flavors from the tobaccos, not from the candystore, and even there you can go from mild to strong, with little kick or with the kick like a chorus girl. But aromatics in pipe tobacco go from the cheap end, right up to quality tobaccos, but with flavoring added too. In cigars the aromatics are only those generally in cigarillos, and generally in the cheapest tobacco, some of which are pipe tobaccos such as Captain Black, etc. Several people i know, who have made the switch from cigars, have noted to me the much wider range of tastes available in pipe tobacco. But Semois, while used in making cigars is NOT "cigar leaf", but a specially cured version of burley. i am not a cigar smoker, can't really take cigar leaf, even in blends that are down below where i can taste it, with the exception of the cigar blend out of Belgium. for one, unless you seek out blends using "tobacco leaf" the tastes are very different.
